Walks
How long are the walks?
Walks are 1 hour in length unless otherwise requested.
Where do you take the dogs?
We have a variety of places we like to go. The main objective is for them to have fun, get exercise and be safe. We love the beach, open parks like Riverdale, and more importantly we love making it an adventure.
Will my dog be going off-leash from day one?
No. Usually it takes a few walks to build up a relationship. First walks are almost always on leash inside a closed-in dog park. The dog then often graduates to off leash but has a long leash on (a light weight 30 ft leash) that allows the dog to run and play closely supervised. This way we can catch him if he is too shy to get close. All dogs are different. Some don't need these steps and others may take longer.
What do you do when the weather is very hot/cold?
As a general guideline, whenever there is an alert issued by the city, we shorten our walks. If the temperature is above 30°C or below -15 °C, we walk for 30-45 minutes depending on the stamina of the dogs. Above all the health and safety of the group determines how long we are out for. See some guidelines here.
Do you accept dogs that are not “fixed”?
Once a dog starts maturing sexually around 5-6 months of age, we can not keep them in a group walk until they are spayed/neutered. Unfixed dogs tend to illicit strong reactions from others even if they themselves are not disruptive.
My dog was bitten by another dog (or has bitten another dog). Do you have any aggressive dogs on your walks?
We aim to build your dogs’ confidence by being supportive and consistent. We never put dogs together if they don't get along or fear another in the group. One incident of fear aggression is not the same as an overtly aggressive dog. We assess each dog individually. The safety of our "pack" comes first though. We do not accept aggressive/reactive dogs for this reason.
My dog is allergic to salmon/peanut butter/rice/hipsters, do you need to know?
Yes. We use treats occasionally as reinforcers. If you have special treats you may provide them. Otherwise we usually use liver snacks (but not always).
Can you pick my dog up at a specific time?
While we can give a window of time, precise times are not possible. The nature of dogs is such that timing is not precise. Plus Toronto is always good for traffic anomalies.
Do you have a philosophy about training?
We do not try to dominate your dog. We work cooperatively and reinforce positivity. We encourage confidence and good manners in all our dog friends.
I don’t like the idea of my dog driving around with so many other dogs, why do you do that?
We spend as little time in the car as possible. We pick up our dogs (who we have determined , get along) one by one then take them to the park/beach/trail. There are usually only 6 dogs at a time in the spacious back area of the car. The car is blanketed and climate controlled and there is plenty of room for them to travel comfortably. Besides, your dog won't be driving around as I’m sure he or she is not licensed and does not have opposable thumbs.
